DIN 66399 Levels and Why We Destroy at P-5
DIN 66399 is the standard that defines how small paper must be shredded. The higher the P-level, the smaller the particles and the harder reconstruction becomes. An ordinary office shredder usually reaches P-2 or P-3. We destroy by default at P-5, the level the GDPR expects for ID numbers, medical and other special categories of personal data.
| Level | Particle size | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|
| P-2 | Strips up to ≈ 800 mm² | General internal documents without personal data |
| P-3 | Particles up to ≈ 320 mm² | Documents with ordinary personal data |
| P-4 | Particles up to ≈ 160 mm² | Sensitive personal and commercial data |
| P-5 (our level) | Particles up to ≈ 30 mm² | ID numbers, medical and special personal data |
| P-6 | Particles up to ≈ 10 mm² | Secret business and government information |
| P-7 | Particles up to ≈ 5 mm² | Top-secret and strictly classified information |
At P-5 a particle is so small that loose fragments can no longer be pieced back into readable information. Read more in DIN 66399 explained (P-5 and P-6).
When Should You Have Confidential Paper Shredded?
Not all documents belong in the recycling bin. As soon as documents contain personal data, financial data or confidential business information, secure destruction is the sensible choice. This prevents sensitive information from falling into the wrong hands and helps you comply with the GDPR.
Common documents businesses have destroyed are:
- Personnel files
- Client data
- Contracts
- Invoices
- Tax returns
- Bank statements
- Payroll records
- Medical files
- Legal documents
- Old archives
In doubt whether documents must be kept? First check the legal retention period. If it has passed, professional paper shredding is the safest way to dispose of them. Read more about the 7-year tax retention obligation and about destroying confidential documents.
Which Documents Should Never Go in the Paper Recycling?
Many people throw old documents straight into the paper container. That seems harmless, but documents with personal data can be misused for identity fraud or data breaches.
So have these documents destroyed, among others:
- Copies of passports or ID cards
- Documents with an ID number
- Payslips
- Bank details
- Medical information
- Personnel records
- Client files
- Quotes and contracts
- Confidential business documents
Professional destruction to DIN 66399 P-5 ensures the information can no longer be reconstructed. See also what does not belong in the paper bin and ID numbers in old records.
From Pickup to Destruction: The Chain Stays Closed
Confidential destruction stands or falls with a closed chain. From the moment we collect your paper until it is destroyed, it stays under control. There is no moment in between where someone can simply reach your documents.
- Locked container. Your paper goes in a lockable roll container, not an open bin.
- Sealed on the spot. At pickup we seal the container with a numbered seal. The seal number is on your pickup slip.
- Sealed transport. No intermediate storage, no transfers. The paper goes straight to destruction.
- Destruction at P-5. Shredded within 24 hours to DIN 66399 P-5, so reconstruction is impossible.
- Certificate as the closing piece. You receive a Certificate of Destruction with the date and job number.
More on how that chain works is in chain of custody from archive to shredder and the certificate of destruction explained.
What Happens To Your Paper After Shredding?
After pickup your documents are transported in a locked container. Thanks to sealed transport the chain of custody is fully preserved.
On arrival the paper is destroyed within 24 hours to DIN 66399 P-5. The shredded paper is then compacted and sent to a certified paper processor. There it is processed into new paper raw material.
Your confidential information is destroyed for good, while the paper gets a second life as recycled paper. So you combine secure document shredding with sustainable processing of paper waste. Read more about what happens to paper after shredding.

Frequently Asked Questions About Paper Shredding
What does it cost to have paper shredded?
From € 30 all-in for the first archive box (up to ≈ 15 kg). Every extra box in the same pickup costs € 25. A 240 L roll container is € 120 all-in. Large volume? Ask for a fixed day rate. All prices exclude 21% VAT.
How does having paper shredded via a pickup service work?
We place a locked roll container at your office. You fill it with confidential paper. On the agreed day we collect it and destroy everything within 24 hours. You receive a Certificate of Destruction by email.
Do I need to sign up for a subscription?
No. We handle one-off jobs and recurring pickup routes. You decide how often. No minimum, no contract term, no notice period.
Is the shredding GDPR-compliant?
Yes. We destroy to DIN 66399 P-5 and provide a Certificate of Destruction with every job, showing the date and a unique job number. You add this certificate to your GDPR processing register.
Do folders and paperclips need to come out?
No. Paperclips, staples and tabs can stay in. We remove large metal ring binders ourselves. You don't need to pre-sort anything.
Can I also have a complete archive shredded?
Yes. For larger archives (dozens of boxes or multiple roll containers) we collect everything in a single run. Call or message us on WhatsApp for a fixed price based on your volume. We respond within 1 working day.
How long until I receive the certificate?
You receive the Certificate of Destruction within 2 working days of the pickup day, by email. For urgent jobs (within 24 hours) we deliver the certificate the same day.
What is the difference between having paper shredded and confidential paper destruction?
In practice both mean the same. It is about making paper with sensitive information irreversibly illegible. Shredding refers to reducing it to particles, destruction is the broader term. We do it to DIN 66399 P-5 with a certificate as proof.
Can paper with personal data go in the recycling?
No. Putting paper with personal data unshredded in the recycling is a data breach under the GDPR. It should be destroyed confidentially, with a certificate as proof.
Which DIN level do you use?
We destroy by default to DIN 66399 P-5, the level suitable for ID numbers, medical and other special personal data. Reconstruction of the particles is then not possible.
How do I know for sure my paper was really destroyed?
The whole chain stays closed. Locked container, sealed transport and destruction at P-5. You receive a Certificate of Destruction with the date and job number as proof.
Do you also collect from private individuals?
Yes. Private individuals and businesses pay the same rates. We collect your personal archive at your home address and destroy it to the right level, with a certificate.
Can I also have USB sticks or hard drives destroyed?
Yes. Data carriers can come in the same pickup. They are registered separately on serial number and destroyed to their own level, with the serial numbers on the certificate.
How fast can you collect?
A pickup is often possible within a few working days. In a hurry, an urgent pickup can usually be planned. You give when it must go and you get a time window back.
In which area do you collect paper?
Throughout the Netherlands. In the Amsterdam region we come at no pickup charge. Elsewhere we combine your pickup with a nearby route, which is why those need at least 2 weeks. In a hurry? A sooner pickup is possible for a per-kilometre fee.
