DeSnipperaar vs Renewi: which one when?

Renewi is one of the largest waste processors in the Benelux. Listed, active in the Netherlands and Belgium, with a broad portfolio ranging from commercial waste and organic waste to paper and data destruction. DeSnipperaar is a small, mobile specialist: a shredder truck that drives to your location within 20 km of Amsterdam-Noord. Two different models, each with its own sweet spot. This article sets them side by side, honestly.

Renewi in brief

Renewi was formed from the merger of Shanks and Van Gansewinkel and mainly serves medium to large organisations with existing waste contracts. Document destruction is a submodule within their broader portfolio. Clients often already have containers for paper, cardboard, commercial waste and organic waste, and add a confidential paper container to that. Renewi collects that container periodically and destroys centrally.

Strong points: scale, nationwide coverage, multiple waste streams under one invoice, group-level ESG reporting, well-defined processes for large volumes.

DeSnipperaar in brief

We drive a mobile shredder to your door and destroy on site at DIN 66399 P-5 for paper and H-4/E-4 for data carriers. No contract, no minimum, no container on the premises. You order when you need it, you watch through a side window or cabin monitor, and you get the certificate immediately.

Chain risk

With Renewi the archive goes into a container that is collected and processed centrally. That chain is professionally secured with sealing, logging and surveillance. But between the archive cabinet and the shredder there are steps: storage in the container, transport, arrival at the processing site, waiting time before destruction. Each step is a theoretical risk point.

With us the paper never leaves your building intact. The shredder is in your car park or in your alley, you watch, and within an hour everything is shreds. For files covered by professional secrecy that is decisive. Read also our article on mobile versus offsite shredding.

Cost structure

Renewi typically charges a monthly subscription or service fee plus a price per kilo. For an organisation that continuously produces a stream of confidential paper, that can be efficient. For a law firm doing two archive rounds a year, the model is relatively expensive. You also pay for months without destruction.

We charge per job: a call-out fee plus a price per kilo. You only pay when something is actually destroyed.

One-off clear-out or regular round needed?

Honest advice

Renewi is not a bad choice, on the contrary. For a large office with continuous production and broader waste needs it is often the most practical solution. We are built for the situations where a fixed contract is too heavy: the notary who wants to clear out twice a year, the accountant who wants to dispose of files after the tax season, the doctor who has to destroy years of patient files when moving practice.

Do not forget the processor agreement in either case. Every external destruction party is a processor under the GDPR.
